Simple systems beat ambitious goals

Everyone has set an ambitious goal in January and abandoned it by February. The problem is rarely the goal. It's the lack of a system behind it.

A goal tells you where you want to go. A system tells you what you do today, whether you feel motivated or not. It's the difference between "I want to read more" and "I read ten pages after breakfast".

Simple systems work because they need very little willpower. They don't depend on you having a good day. They only ask you to repeat the same small action, again.

Over time, the system builds the result the goal promised, without needing daily motivation to get there.

If a goal of yours has been stuck for months, maybe what's missing isn't more willpower. Maybe what's missing is a system small enough that you never fail at it.
