Adam and Eve · Ādam and Ḥawwāʾ

The first human couple, created by God and placed in the garden, where they disobey a single command and are expelled. Both traditions tell almost the same fall, but read very differently what it means for everyone who came after.

The fall in the garden

Divergence

Biblical text

Gênesis 3:1-24

1Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

2And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

3But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

4And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

5For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

6And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

7And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

8And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

9And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

10And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

11And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

12And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

13And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

14And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

15And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

16Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

17And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

18Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;

19In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

20And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.

21Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

22And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

23Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.

24So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Qur'an

Al-A'raf 7:19-25

19And (unto man): O Adam! Dwell thou and thy wife in the Garden and eat from whence ye will, but come not nigh this tree lest ye become wrong-doers

20Then Satan whispered to them that he might manifest unto them that which was hidden from them of their shame, and he said: Your Lord forbade you from this tree only lest ye should become angels or become of the immortals

21And he swore unto them (saying): Lo! I am a sincere adviser unto you

22Thus did he lead them on with guile. And when they tasted of the tree their shame was manifest to them and they began to hide (by heaping) on themselves some of the leaves of the Garden. And their Lord called them, (saying): Did I not forbid you from that tree and tell you: Lo! Satan is an open enemy to you

23They said: Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If thou forgive us not and have not mercy on us, surely we are of the lost

24He said: Go down (from hence), one of you a foe unto the other. There will be for you on earth a habitation and provision for a while

25He said: There shall ye live, and there shall ye die, and thence shall ye be brought forth

Qur'an

Ta-Ha 20:120-123

120But the devil whispered to him, saying: O Adam! Shall I show thee the tree of immortality and power that wasteth not away

121Then they twain ate thereof, so that their shame became apparent unto them, and they began to hide by heaping on themselves some of the leaves of the Garden. And Adam disobeyed his Lord, so went astray

122Then his Lord chose him, and relented toward him, and guided him

123He said: Go down hence, both of you, one of you a foe unto the other. But when there come unto you from Me a guidance, then whoso followeth My guidance, he will not go astray nor come to grief

In common

In both accounts, the couple lives in a garden and receives a single prohibition: not to eat the fruit of one specific tree. A tempting voice convinces them to disobey, promising knowledge or immortality, and both eat. Shame follows, along with awareness of their own nakedness, and expulsion from the garden. In both traditions, God keeps speaking to Adam after the fall, and exile from the garden isn't the end of the relationship between Creator and creature.

Differences

The deepest difference lies in what the fall means for everyone who came after. In traditional Christian reading, Adam's sin introduces a hereditary stain ("original sin") passed on to all of humanity, resolved only through Christ's atonement, a doctrine Genesis itself doesn't spell out explicitly but which the New Testament (for example, Romans 5) builds on this episode. Islam rejects that idea of inherited guilt: every person is born without sin, and the Qur'an (7:23) shows Ādam himself repenting and being forgiven within the same account, without that personal failing passing down to his descendants. There's also a difference of detail over who is tempted first: the Bible (Genesis 3:1-6) has the serpent addressing Eve first, who then gives the fruit to Adam; the Qur'an (7:20, 20:120) describes Satan/Shayṭān whispering to both of them, without assigning Ḥawwāʾ a distinct initial responsibility.

Christian doctrine of original sin: Formulated chiefly by Saint Augustine (4th-5th century) drawing on readings of Romans 5:12-19; it is central doctrine in Catholicism and much of Protestantism, though Eastern Orthodox churches read it differently (speaking not of inherited guilt but of inherited mortality).

Islamic perspective: The absence of original sin is a unanimous position among Islamic schools of thought: every human being is born in a state of fitrah (pure nature); see Qur'an 30:30 and 7:23.
